The U.S. Coast Guard is set to begin a formal investigation on the New Year's Eve grounding of the Kulluk, a Royal Dutch Shell drilling rig, on Alaska's Sitkaliadak Island. The inquiry will seek the possible causes of the incident and determine whether any negligence or misconduct led to the grounding. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the National Transportation Safety Board will advise on the probe while a Coast Guard investigating officer will be in charge of the inquiries.
