NRC proceeds with plan to enhance security at used-fuel sites

A proposed rule by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to equip security officers stationed at used-fuel storage sites with high-capacity weapons, including machine guns, is moving forward, the agency said. "The proposed action could reduce the risk that public health will be affected by radiological releases because of the increased likelihood of a successful repulsion of an attack," the NRC said.
