Simple, an online startup company based in Portland, Ore., is gaining popularity with its offer of free checking accounts and analysis of spending habits and transactions. The company began signing up customers late last year and now has 20,000. Simple has the backing of major venture capital firms and uses federally insured banks to hold customer money.
