Deal to extend jobless benefits bogged down in Senate

Senate Democrats couldn't win enough GOP support for the 60 votes they needed for a bill that would extend jobless benefits for 1.3 million Americans whose unemployment compensation has ended. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., angered GOP senators when he said Republicans wouldn't be allowed to offer amendments. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said he will work over the weekend on a compromise to save the bill.
