Food and beverage manufacturers exceed calorie-cutting goal

In 2012, 16 of the largest U.S. food companies sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories than in 2007, surpassing the goal they had established to cut calorie consumption by 1 trillion by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015. When the goal was announced in 2010, companies said they would reformulate products to decrease calories, reduce portion size and promote lower-calorie options. Companies that took the pledge include Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods Group, ConAgra Foods, General Mills, Mars, Nestle and Hershey.
