Jeb Bush Calls National Certification Program Too Costly

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has proposed capping at 500 the number of state teachers eligible this year for certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The program cost the state $31 million in 2001, much of which went toward the $4,000 bonuses given to nationally certified teachers. Florida leads the nation in the number of teachers applying for the credential.
