California teachers union assail merit pay proposal

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's bombshell proposal last Wednesday that teacher pay be tied to merit rather than tenure has drawn immediate flack from union leaders. Some educational leaders, like San Francisco schools Superintendent Arlene Ackerman and Los Angeles school board President Jose Huizar, however, argue that paying teachers for results would help close the achievement gap.
