Many students, including those with learning disabilities or from poor homes, found success through New York's Crossroads Middle School, but the innovative school in recent years has faced severe staffing and program difficulties. The school was created 16 years ago as an "unorthodox public alternative" to junior high schools in the Upper West Side, and its difficulties show the fragility of unconventional schools, The New York Times reports.
