Study: Diet rich in iron increases diabetics' heart disease risk

Food rich in heme iron, such as red meat, chicken liver, clams and oysters could increase the risk of heart disease in diabetics, according to a new study. Researchers following 6,161 women with Type 2 diabetes found that a high intake of heme iron appeared to increase the risk of heart disease, and those who consumed the highest amount of heme iron had a 50% higher chance of developing heart disease than those with the lowest intake.
