CIOs' influence moves beyond IT

The title of chief information officer has shifted from being an unglamorous IT job to a key strategic role, and sometimes even serving as a steppingstone to the CEO post, Richard Hunter and George Westerman write. A survey by Gartner found 26% of CIOs had no IT background, and more than 50% participate in leadership functions outside IT. "The CIO is in many cases the single executive with the most comprehensive view of the enterprise's processes and priorities," they write.
