Use heart rate to gauge workout intensity, experts say

The best way to pace a workout is to keep the heart rate in a training or target zone based on maximum heart rate, says Dr. Adrian Hutber of the American College of Sports Medicine. Target zones vary by the intensity of a workout, but a simple check may be the sing-talk test, which holds that a person who can converse but not sing is having a moderate intensity workout.
