NYC contest seeks best middle-school math apps

New York City is running an application-development contest for programs that will teach math skills to middle schoolers. The Gap App Challenge will divide $50,000 among the winning app developers as part of an initiative to improve science, technology, engineering and math education. The contest comes as Mayor Michael Bloomberg has cracked down on the use of cellphones in the classroom, but contest officials say the apps can be directed toward students, teachers or parents and work on any device platform.
