An international team of scientists led by researchers from the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute has pinpointed the first enzyme capable of boosting the galactan content in plant cells, according to a report in the journal Plant Cell. Galactans are made up of hexoses, which are easier than pentoses to convert into biofuels and other compounds, said Henrik Scheller, vice president of JBEI's Feedstocks Division. The finding "provides an important new tool for the engineering of advanced bioenergy fuel crops," Scheller said.
