New rules, fees on Virgin Atlantic garner complaints from travel agents

Some travel agents have reacted negatively to the new seat assignment policy Virgin Atlantic plans to roll out beginning Feb. 1, as well as its new fees for early seat selection by economy-class passengers beginning in April. The rules remove agents' ability to select seats for clients and charge economy passengers a minimum of $40 if they select seats before the online check-in period. "This will add phone calls as travel agents request advance seat assignments for additional legroom, exit rows, etc., or changes to existing seat assignments – plus confusion when we inform them that seats are assigned at flight check-in," said Jack Richards, president and CEO of Pleasant Holidays.
