Portland, Maine, might add fee for shopping bags

The Green Packaging Working Group in Portland, Maine, is scheduled to meet next week to discuss a possible 10-cent fee on each paper or plastic bag at grocers and convenience stores, to reduce waste and litter. The City Council is considering banning plastic bags, but a fee might lead consumers to shop in other communities, Maine Grocers and Food Producers Association Executive Director Shelly Doak says.
