The Transportation Department on Friday proposed sweeping changes to the rules governing airborne shipments of lithium batteries. Under the new rules, flight crews must be alerted to battery shipments, batteries must be stowed in areas accessible to fire crews and defective batteries must be shipped via road or rail. While some pilots' groups welcomed the new regulations, battery manufacturers questioned their rationale. "We urge the public not to lose sight of the fact that billions of lithium ion batteries are shipped safely annually," said a statement from The Rechargeable Battery Association.
