An Illinois district is testing a program that teaches for one hour daily select third- and fourth-graders accelerated math. Educators say more students are eligible for advanced lessons under the pilot program, which also increases the amount of time students spend in gifted courses. The current gifted program offers 70 minutes of differentiated learning in math and language arts to the top 5% of students each week. A restructured program also could reduce district spending on gifted-education specialists.
