Snake bites: Treatment and prevention

Florida has about 40 snake species, four of which are poisonous, so dog owners must know how to handle an encounter between their pet and a snake. Training dogs to avoid snakes by teaching them the "leave it" command is the best prevention, but bites do occur, and veterinarian David Randall explains the treatment and prognosis. Non-venomous snake bites are managed with antibiotics, Dr. Randall said, but if the appropriate anti-venom can be obtained, even victims of bites from poisonous snakes can recover.
