Dallas' "no insurance" law drives liability coverage sales

A new Dallas ordinance requiring the towing of uninsured cars has seen 256 cars impounded in its first nine days. Drivers who don't carry at least liability insurance must pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine and $20 for each day their car is impounded. Basic liability coverage averages $36 a month. Auto insurers report a steady stream of new customers since the law went into effect.
