Study: Obese Americans outnumber overweight

U.S. statistics show more than 34% of U.S. adults were obese in 2005-2006, compared with 32.7% who were overweight and about 6% who were considered extremely obese. The National Center for Health Statistics study, based on a survey of 4,356 adults, said the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled since 1980 while the prevalence of overweight has remained stable.
