Debate: Pros and cons of full-body scanners

The debate over full-body scanners boils down to a simple choice, according to the USA TODAY editorial board: "Safety over modesty, the same trade-off you make to get an annual physical." While acknowledging that "the TSA has damaged its credibility with conflicting information," the paper says sufficient privacy safeguards are in place, and the Senate should vote to allow the machines to be used for primary screening. But privacy expert Marc Rotenberg responds that scanners are "uniquely intrusive" devices, with variable privacy settings and questionable efficacy.
