McDonald's promotes Thompson to president-COO

McDonald's Corp. named Don Thompson as its new president and chief operating officer, replacing Ralph Alvarez who resigned in December. Thompson, who has led the company's U.S. business for the past three years, will now oversee the company's 32,000 restaurants worldwide. The promotion also makes Thompson the most likely candidate to succeed CEO Jim Skinner.
