White House backs Gillibrand against Ford's challenge

White House officials are opposing a run by Harold E. Ford Jr. against Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in the fall Democratic primary. A former Tennessee congressman, Ford said last week that he was seriously considering a run against Gillibrand, prompting New York Gov. David Paterson to suggest Ford consider running in another state. "I think the White House is quite happy with the leadership and the representation of Senator Gillibrand in New York," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "We're supporting her re-election."
