Sprinklers may be required in new Minnesota homes

A proposal to mandate sprinklers in new single-family and duplex construction has gained strong support in Minnesota in spite of critics' complaints that the requirement would cost too much for homeowners. Sprinklers would be installed in every room, with a few exceptions. The International Code Council touched off the debate in September 2008 when it recommended the measure to the state Department of Labor and Industry, which updates Minnesota's fire code every three years. The next update is scheduled for 2011.
