REITs growing more popular with defined contribution plans

Real estate and REITs have been an important part of the investment portfolios of defined benefit retirement plans for decades. Now, real estate is gaining acceptance among defined contribution plans, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans. Publicly traded REITs are particularly popular with these plans. One survey of defined contribution plan sponsors found REITs to be the most "highly sought" new target-date fund asset class.
