Carriers point to added value of NFC in smartphones

With consumers still unsure about mobile-payment services, carriers this week talked up the wide-ranging benefits of deploying near-field communications chips in smartphones. Verizon Wireless touted the ability of NFC-enabled phones to open deadbolt-locked doors, and Research In Motion pointed to the value of syncing the handsets to in-car applications. "If you're really going to get consumer adoption, you have to start talking about the capability in terms they can relate," said Kevin McGinnis, a vice president at Sprint Nextel.
