Google acquires digital-thermostat company in $3.2B deal

Google is making a play in the "Internet of Things" market by buying Nest Labs in a $3.2 billion deal. Nest, led by former Apple executive Tony Fadell, is a maker of smart thermostats and smoke alarms. "This is about whose service -- Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and others -- is going to coordinate your smart home for you," said Frank Gillett of Forrester.
