SNA: Relaxed meal standards offer more flexibility

The School Nutrition Association was concerned about the federal government's limits on the amount of meat and grains that could be served in schools from the start, said spokeswoman Diane Pratt-Heavner, who pointed out there is relief now that the standards have been relaxed. "Most importantly, the calorie maximums are still in place," she said, adding, "The new standards put in place a maximum for the amount of calories with every meal, so this is just giving the schools more flexibility on how they use those calories in planning the menu."
