Suntory agrees to purchase Beam for $16B

Japanese whiskey and spirits manufacturer Suntory Holdings has agreed to purchase Beam Inc. for about $16 billion, including debt, in an effort to acquire brands including Maker's Mark. Exports of U.S. whiskey grew to a $1 billion business last year, more than double what it was 10 years ago, and Suntory already distributed Beam products in Japan. In the transaction, investors will get about 25% more for their shares.
