Senate committee urges strict review of immunity requests

In a letter last month to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, the Senate Judiciary Committee urged the Justice Department to grant antitrust immunity only "sparingly," in those rare situations "where parties seeking immunity have sustained their heavy burden of establishing that competition must be supplanted to serve some other public interest." Three U.S. carriers -- American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines -- have requested antitrust immunity to pursue closer cooperation with international partners.
