Snow load on N.D. buildings prompts evaluation by engineers

Two commercial buildings in Jamestown, N.D., closed this week after heavy snow on their rooftops raised concerns about safety. Engineers evaluated the Buffalo Mall and the Jamestown Business Center, and managers said they hoped to reopen later this week. Meanwhile, experts note that the accumulation of wet, heavy snow can also threaten residential roofs, although houses that are built with 2- by 6-inch pre-built truss rafters can withstand a 30- to 40-pound-per-square-foot snow load.
