Researchers: It's a myth that startups surge in a recession

The startup rate for U.S. businesses has remained "surprisingly steady" for the past three decades, according to a Kauffmann Foundation study, despite the conventional wisdom that recessions tend to spark more entrepreneurial activity. Despite the report, researchers agree that the most successful companies tend to be started during times of economic hardship.
