Your instincts will fail you

Going with your gut is a great way to lead -- right up until the moment when your instincts lead you in the wrong direction, writes Reid Carr. To avoid reflexively running into trouble, Carr argues, it's vital to prepare yourself for decisions by reading trade journals, seeking out new perspectives and opinions and working to internalize your company's values and goals. "Going strictly on instinct will, in the long run, cause more harm than good," Carr writes. "Managers must make decisions; the key is in being prepared to do so when necessary."
