Reading First cut concerns educators

A deep cut made by Congress to this fiscal year's funding for the Reading First program has some educators concerned. The program has had some administrative problems, but nevertheless is credited with helping many struggling schools improve student reading. Joni Gillis, who oversees Oregon Reading First, said the cut means the program "is not going to be like it was." Nevertheless, she added, "the best practices, the solid core instruction, how we look at data to inform that instruction ... [are] behavior changes [that] will stick."
