Study: Hospitals could benefit from using surgery checklist

Eight hospitals were able to significantly lower their mortality rates by using a 19-point surgery checklist of basic safety measures designed to help doctors and nurses avoid errors, a study funded by the World Health Organization found. Aside from helping save thousands of lives, the checklist could also help reduce annual medical costs by $20 billion if used by all hospitals, the study author said.
