Protests force scientists to stop avalanche experiment on pigs

Scientists Thursday decided to temporarily halt an experiment in Austria after animal-rights groups protested the study, in which researchers bury the pigs in snow and observe their deaths to identify factors that could help humans survive an avalanche. One leader of the experiment said the pigs didn't feel pain because they administered a sedative and an anesthetic to the animals prior to the experiment.
