When designing for smartphones, don't think small, think flexible

When it comes to optimizing a website for smartphone compatibility, it's easier to start from scratch with a responsive-design strategy than attempt to redesign an existing large-screen format to meet small-screen needs. Clunky legacy layouts that worked on desktop screens get lost in the world of handheld devices. The answer, however, isn't to deign smaller, but to create more flexible arrangements that can stand up in an era where content is regularly viewed on many different screen sizes, writes Ben Gremillion.
