3D views show how sodium affects opioid receptor signaling

High-resolution 3D images of opioid receptors in the brain show how sodium affects signaling, which could help in the development of new pain drugs, according to a study in the journal Nature. Researchers studied the allosteric sodium site, where sodium ions modulate receptor activity, and identified amino acids that hold ions there to allow the transmission of the modulating effect.
