Bertha blockage update: Time for crews to go "hyperbaric"

Crews will go "hyperbaric" to check Bertha, the tunnel-boring machine at work on the Highway 99 tunnel in Seattle. Crews will use a bentonite clay slurry and compressed air to reduce some of the pressure in the cutting face of the machine, and then workers will be sent down to inspect the area. Meanwhile, nearly three dozen of the TBM's cutter head tools have been replaced, and the Washington Department of Transportation officials said Bertha will finish its work.
