Dissenters make case for keeping current hypertension thresholds

Some members of the Eighth Joint National Committee said they disagreed with the group's recommendation to raise blood pressure treatment thresholds for most older patients. In an article published in Annals of Internal Medicine, the dissenters said they thought the evidence to support raising the threshold was inadequate, that higher targets might reduce the intensity of treatment among high-risk groups and that the change could erode decades of progress made in preventing cardiovascular disease.
