Economic factors cause countries to focus on polar zones

Global warming may be part of the reason that countries increasingly are interested in the Arctic and Antarctica, but a stronger motivation also may be the desire to access valuable natural resources in those regions. "It's globalization," said Lawson Brigham, a geography professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. "Higher commodity prices will drive frontier development."
