Wise: Deeper learning should be a top priority in education

Schools in the U.S. must focus more on deeper learning and critical thinking needed to make real-world decisions, compete internationally and succeed under the Common Core State Standards, according to Bob Wise, chairman of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and president of the Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit Alliance for Excellent Education, and Barbara Chow, program director for education at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. "Simply put, deeper learning for us means that students should be able to use the knowledge and skills they gain in each academic subject," they write in this commentary.
