Lawmaker: Delta, Northwest start formal merger talks

Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines have started formal merger talks, Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., said. He noted Northwest will look for a different partner if Delta decides to merge with United Airlines instead. Spokespeople for Delta and Northwest declined to comment on whether the airlines are negotiating. Meanwhile, a Georgia lawmaker said Delta executives have indicated the airline will remain based in Atlanta if it merges with another carrier.
