Study: Antiretroviral drugs may protect against HIV transmission

Researchers in Texas found that the antiretroviral drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate can prevent vaginal transmission of HIV in mice when given in daily doses before and after exposure to the virus. The mice used in the study had fully developed human immune systems that produced the kind of anti-infection cells that HIV targets.
