Microsoft had developed an ad-supported search system similar to Google at one point but killed the service after two months. It also passed up a chance to buy the company that became the heart of Yahoo!'s ad-driven search enterprise. Now that Yahoo! has a new CEO in Carol Bartz, Ballmer may get another chance to correct these errors and challenge Google's search-engine dominance.
