Researchers aim for wireless systems for monitoring bridge safety

Civil engineers at the University of Texas of Austin are developing two wireless monitoring inspection systems that will allow them to monitor the safety of bridges. The school has formed a partnership with National Instruments and Wiss Janney Elstner Associates for the $6.8 million project, which is partially funded through a grant. "This project will not only transform the evaluation practices used for highway bridges today, but will dramatically advance the state of the art in wireless sensing technology," said Sharon Wood, chair of UT's department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and the principal investigator.
