The declining cost of materials has lowered the cost of some renovation projects, experts say. They point to the overproduction of homes earlier this decade and weak demand for renovation projects as two factors behind the lower costs. However, prices for less discretionary projects, like repairing a roof, haven't seen much decline. "Even though the materials prices have come down, the roofing manufacturers are hesitant to start giving back," says Kevin Schroeder, a Chicago contractor.
