The faulty design of the 10-year-old metal roof on the Mount Solo Middle School in Longview, Wash., has caused leaks, prompting the school board to have it replaced for $1.1 million. The school's gently sloped roof is covered with overlapping metal sheets. Rivets hold the sheets together, but their holes widen as the sheets expand or contract with the weather. The roof will be replaced with a membrane made from vinyl sheeting or rubberized asphalt.
