Congressional committee begins work to amend landmark telecom law

A House committee on Wednesday began efforts to bring the Telecommunications Act of 1996 into the smartphone and tablets age with hopes of rewriting a law that barely mentions the term "broadband." Republicans on the House Energy and Committee pushed for broad changes, while some Democrats favored letting the Federal Communications Commission do most of the heavy lifting. "The Communications Act continues to provide the FCC with ample authority to exercise its role in this new environment," said Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif.
