The driving factor behind the alleged teacher shortage is high turnover, not a shortage of candidates, says Pam Grossman of Stanford University. Salaries for teachers haven't kept pace with inflation, working conditions are poor and the profession doesn't offer enough challenging career opportunities, Grossman says.
